Library Goal: Facilities for Storage, Access and Dissemination.

'we face a serious challenge to our country that lies within our borders - and even within our schools: the threat of American amnesia.' Dr. Bruce Cole, Chairman, National Endowment for the Humanities. As the collection is being acquired, inventoried and catalogued, the Library will create a web site to facilitate access to its catalogue and to those items that the library can make available on line through digital reproduction. In the furtherance of enhancing public access to documents relating to American history, the Library of American History web site will also allow users to access an extensive collection of other web sites and on line documents and services that provide information on American History. The Library's web site will also link to on-line catalogues of public and university libraries that maintain extensive collections of books on American history and of historical documents and periodicals.

Also as the collection is being acquired, inventoried and catalogued, the Library will construct or acquire physical space to store the books in a way that facilitates the broadest public access possible. The initial and central Library of American History will be located in the Washington DC metropolitan area at the historic town of Fredericksburg, VA. Once the central library is established, satellite libraries may be established in other regions, preferably in cooperation with existing university or public libraries, to store, preserve and make available duplicate materials acquired through the collection mechanisms discussed above. These satellite facilities will be operated in cooperation with existing educational institutions and libraries.

Until such time as satellite libraries are established, the Library of American History will actively participate in existing, national inter-library loan programs to allow individuals and scholars anywhere in the country to inexpensively access the collection on a temporary loan basis, or to acquire copies of such materials if copyright status permits.

The facilities of the Library of American History will also include class rooms, meeting rooms, research facilities and offices to house the many related educational programs that will be a key component of the Library's services.
